Programs > What Is Community Action
The NJ Community Action Association represents 26 agencies that provide direct services in every county throughout New Jersey. Community Action Agencies are committed to making a difference in the community by providing services to low income individuals and families.

Each agency provides services unique to the needs of the community; however, many programs and services are offered consistently across New Jersey. Community Action Agencies serve low income and economically disadvantaged individuals and families by providing access to programs that encourage self-sufficiency and help people move out of poverty.

Many individuals receive one time emergency services, while many others take advantage of the many self sufficiency building programs that are available. Stronger individuals help to create stronger communities and community action agencies are committed to strengthening individuals and communities.

Programs and services offered at most agencies include:
  • Housing Assistance (Weatherization, LIHEAP)
  • Financial Assistance (Rent, Utilities)
  • Job Training
  • Primary Health Care Services
  • Head Start
  • Child Care
  • Food & Nutrition
  • Foreclosure Assistance-Eviction Prevention
  • Employment Assistance
  • Literacy
  • Emergency Shelter
